The term ‘spa’, which is widely used in all the major centres throughout the world, is now reaching even the most remote areas on the four corners of globe. But what does this three-letter word actually represent?
The first spa’s made their appearance in California in the eighties. They were basically locations where body and mind could be treated simultaneously. They were usually frequented by the celebrities. They served as a kind of retreat venue where one could go to find relaxation through massage and also through the practice of yoga and meditation etc.
These days, every hotel worth its five diamonds or stars is opening a spa. In-room massage plus a vest-pocket gym with two treadmills just doesn't cut it anymore. Peace of mind has become a precious commodity and it is not surprising with the busy lifestyles we all lead. Many of us urgently need to escape our work schedules and address issues such as aging, dietary habits, and stress. What better place to do this than a haven where that wilful child called the Inner You is given centre stage? Sometimes we all need to ‘get away from it all’!
With thousands of spas to choose from around the globe and more opening every day, where do you start and how do you know you are going to get what you are looking for? At many of today’s spas, the spiritual dimension has taken a backseat with the focus being on the complete relaxation of the body! With terms like thalassotherapy, balneotherapy, shiatsu and hot stone massage mixed in with destination spa, golf spa and health spa, where do you start and how do you know what you are looking for?
